Google Ben Galbraith: what is the future of mobile web

Google Developer Day was held on December 8 in Beijing. This conference was mainly for Chinese developers. It was considered as the biggest developers conference that Google held in China in recent years.

Scott Beaumont made a welcome speech and lectured as the first person. During his lecture, he talked about the booming of mobile internet and more and more Chinese developers engaged in mobile app development. Their apps have been distributed to worldwide users through Google Play.

Actually, Google revealed the most popular top 5 apps of 2016 on Google Play, CastBox launched by Chinese developer ranked in the 3rd place.

He also stated that Google has been encouraging mobile web innovation and supporting developers to start a business. Google hopes to help Chinese developers to launch excellent quality apps with innovative technology and one-stop solutions under a healthy and open mobile ecosystem.

Ben Galbraith, Google global developer product director, announced that Google had linked three global developer websites into google.cn. They are developers.google.cn, developer.android.google.cn and ebase.google.cn. The websites are designed in Chinese which Google aims at offering convenience for Chinese developers.

In accordance with Galbraith statement, users can browse the content through mobile web and swtich to bargain link after Alibaba applied PWA.

Galbraith claimed that Google will offer developing ports of AI and machine learning for developers in views of the implementation of AI first strategy. The opened AI systems included TensorFlow and api.ai.

Apple Music obtained 20 million subscribers 17 months after its release

Music Business Worldwide report indicated that Apple Music obtained 20 million subscribers 17 months after its release. However, this figure is hard to compare with Spotify’s subscribers.

At the press conference of iPhone 7 in September, Apple claimed its Apple Music subscribers reached 17 million. That is, the subscribers of Apple Music increased by 3 million in past three months.

Music Business Worldwide addressed that Apple firm confirmed this latest data.

Though Apple achieved this milestone performance in such a short time, its subscribers are still much fewer than Spotify’s. Spotify subscribers increased by 12 million in 2016 and this figure increased from 28 million last year to 40 million this year. While subscribers of Apple Music increased by 10 million, from 10 million at the end of
2015 to 20 million this year.

The success of Spotify that it obtained so many subscribers is that it offers reasonable subscription service.

It is said that Apple considers cutting down the subscription fees of Apple Music. So far, the individual subscriber needs to pay $9.99, and family price pays $14.99 and student pays $4.99. It offers more reasonable options to students at present.

Apple Music has its advantage in comparison with Spotify. It is integrated into Apple music app which is pre-installed in iPhone. When users make new settings of iPhone, the system will notify them whether they would like to apply Apple Music.With this feature, it may help Apple Music obtained more subscribers in 2017.

GoPro may have developed better if it had continuously teamed up with DJI

Since 3D Robotics announced the job cuts and implied that it would quit drone market, GoPro became the challenge-able rival of DJI. GoPro drones were found faults since the release and led to job cuts as 3D Robotics did.

To get out of the trouble, GoPro announced to cut jobs and reconstruct the business last week. The job cuts evolve in 200 positions, accounting for 15% of workforce.Tony Bates, who is responsible for GoPro Media Business, will resign from the company by the end of this year. GoPro also planned to shut down the offices in Los Angeles and Austin and move
its office workers of San Francisco to San Mateo.

GoPro just cut 7% of workforce in January and ends its Entertainment department.

Motion camera is the main business that GoPro left. GoPro was too confident it would explore a remarkable market share in drones.

Before 2013, GoPro and Dji had close cooperations. They were perfect partners as GoPro camera obtained much market share in international market, and Dji also did a great performance in drones. DJI Plantom started receiving great feedback then.

GoPro and DJI planned to product a drone marked with GoPro logo together.However, GoPro wished to take two thirds profit which led to cooperation failed. Shortly, GoPro announced launch drone business and DJI stated launching camera business. If they continuously had worked together, GoPro may have developed better.

GoPro underestimated the launching issues of a drone. It takes risk to launch new products as always.

GoPro revealed that it would launch a quad-rotor called Karma in last May. However, it failed to deliver Karma on time this May and postponed its release date till September 20.

Karma was found with faults during operation on the 16th days it released. GoPro then recalled 2,500 sold Karmas. The company made no announcement when it will be resold. GoPro reached its prime time in 2014 and went declining since then. Its latest earning showed that GoPro’s total revenue of Q316 was $241 million, declining by 40% yoy and its net deficiency was $104 million.

Zynga accused two former workers of stealing its confidential informatio

Zynga accused two former workers of stealing its confidential information and use it for the launch of Scopely products on Tuesday. Scopely company was also one of the defendants in this lawsuit.

These two former workers are Massimo Maietti and Ehud Barlach. Maietti worked as the creative director of Project Mars and resigned from Zynga in July. While Barlach worked as general manager of Hit it Rich! Slots and resigned from Zynga in September.

Maietti was accused of stealing confidential data from Zynga and Zynga implied that Barlach may steal confidential data as well. They were accused of violating employment contract as they worked for another company soon after they left Zynga.

Zynga claimed:” Maietti logged in Zynga’s Google Cloud Drive account on July 4, 2016 through Google Chrome browser. The history record showed that Maietti download 10 files which acquired permission under his job duties. He used Google Chrome to compressed these 10 files and downloaded them to File Download folder. He copied 9 of compressed files and send them to external USB.”

” Maietti pulled out the external USB then and moved the compressed files into recycle bin but save the data in USB. It was tested that Maietti moved 20,000 files and folders into recycle bin to cover what he did.”

The investigators found clues while investigating why employees resigned from Zynga. They found that Maietti took over 14,000 files from Zynga and about 20GB sensitive or top class confidential information.

Zynga mentioned Derek Heck in the lawsuit. He worked as project manager of Wizard of Oz slots and Willy Wonda Slots. He deleted 24,000 files and folders in the last month he worked for Zynga.

Scopely and Zynga made no comments on this piece of news yet.

How Amazon sold 5 million of Echo devices in two years?

Echo has been over two years since its release in November, 2014. In the past two years, Echo becomes the most popular smart home appliances in the market.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners(CIRP) reported that Amazon sold 5.1 million Echo devices in United States by November 21, 2016.

CIRP made a report in April and revealed the sales of Echo reached 3 million units in United States then. That is, the sales of Echo increased by 2 million in past 7 and a half of months.

According to the prediction of CIRP made, Amazon sold about 2 million Echo devices by September, 2016. With the sales increase, the customer awareness of Amazon Echo devices increased sharply as well. The customer awareness of Amazon Echo increased from 20% in March, 2015 to 69% in September, 2016. Its customer awareness increased obviously in the past year.

CIRP also made survey concerning how consumers use Amazon Echo. Based on Echo’s multiple responses allowed, one third users apply it for information, and 40% of users apply it to listen music, and 10% of them apply it to control home appliances.

Amazon did not rush to promote Echo after its release. It invited a group of users from Prime subscribers to do close beta test and offered reasonable price. The Prime subscribers could get a Echo at $99, which was sold at $199.

Amazon collected feedback from beta test users and made improvements based on them. The initial version of Echo did not include smart assistant Alexa. Echo team found that consumers were interested in such function and they launched Alexa API skills kit.

Slice Intelligence found that the sales of Echo made a hit in November, 2015. Amazon kept improving its functions after the release of Alexa, such as Prime Music, Audible book and Google Calendar. The sales increase was also associated with holiday promotions. Amazon announced on November 10, 2015 that consumers could experience Echo at 3,000 offline stores in United States before they made decision to purchase it. The chain stores included The Home Depot, Staples and Sears. Amazon offered discount to Echo on Cyber Monday to stimulate more sales.

This March, Amazon released two new products named Echo Dot and Amazon Tap on the basis of Echo audio speaker. Amazon Tap is portable, smaller and built with Alexa assistant. It shares with the similar function of Echo if Amazon Tap accesses to Wi-Fi.

Home Appliance has promising aspects. Google also followed the pace of Amazon to explore smart home appliance. It released Google Home to compete with Amazon Echo.

Bankrupted VR startups: content is the biggest obstacle to develop VR technology

Expensive price, fewer products of VR are not the main reasons for the slow down of developing VR. Content attraction is the key to success.

Virtuleap is a startup company to help developers show their VR concepts to the world. Amir-Esmaeil Bozorgzadeh stated in an article that the biggest obstacle to develop VR technology is the lack of attractive VR content.

Vrideo was entrance platform and established in 2014. It aimed at being the VR YouTube. It quit game field and shut down the company last week. In VR industry, these two years were equal to 10 years. Vrideo raised $2 million in 2015 to develop VR, however, it still failed as it spent all that money.

The reason why Vrideo failed was that it failed to provide attractive VR content. Virdeo could not go further as it failed to atttract more users.

This year is the key year for VR products. Many enterprises provided VR helmets for families with attractive prices. However, the pressure goes to content developers. They have to create interesting and attractive content so that users can enjoy and love them.

Nic Mitham, CEO of WEARVR, claimed that it was hard to popularize VR if it lacked of content or excellent content when users experienced VR.

Hess Barber, president of First Contact, addressed that the biggest problem that VR industry faced was the lack of high performance VR content.

Therkel Sand Therkelsen, founder of CopenX, assumed it was the key point to seek for solutions to edit new content instead of providing the same service and stories in this new platform.

Therkelsen added:” Developers need to ask themselves why they are editing VR content and where is its value.”

The diversity of VR content would help to attract more users and popularize VR technology better. No one wishes to expend money in similar services or products which they had accessed to.

To attract more Chinese tourists, Tokyo’s Narita Airport offers convenience for Alipay introduction. Alipay is accessable to Fa-So-La, TAX FREE, and AKIHABARA stores in No.1 and No.2 terminal buildings, as well as all famous brands stores in brand mall.

Google keeps acquiring AI companies in the road to artificial intelligence.

DeepMind was acquired by Google on January 26, 2014. DeepMind was considered as the most popular AI startup then.
